Allergy Management

It is important to remember allergies cannot be cured, they can only be controlled. However you can help your pet by pinpointing the problem allergens and then reducing their exposure to them. Many pets whose allergies are controlled make remarkable improvements in their health and wellbeing.

The results of a YorkTest allergy test will provide a useful aid for you and your vet to discuss your pet's problems and indicate the most suitable actions to take.

If foods are identified as the cause of the allergy, then your vet will advise a new diet that avoids the problem food. You will need to ensure that any treats or snacks you give your pet don't contain the offending food. A chart of the results and a food allergy handbook will be provided to assist in the planning of your pet's new diet.

If an environmental allergy is identified, such as pollens, fleas or dust mites, avoiding or controlling the offending allergens is more difficult. If your pet is identified as having an environmental allergy you will be given a booklet containing advice on how to limit your pet's exposure and minimise the presence of the offending allergen in your pet's environment.

Your vet will advise on suitable environmental treatment, medication or immunotherapy, if necessary. See the sections on Immunotherapy and Allergy products for further information.
